How will you address the new Government Code of Connection?

Recent changes to the Code of Connection (CoCo) provide a minimum set of security standards that Local Government organisations must adhere to when joining the GSi (Government Secure Intranet).

CoCo Version 4.1 introduces several new areas of guidance including the requirement for the 'execution of unauthorised software to be prevented'. We have a simple solution - AppSense Application Manager - out of the box it ensures only applications installed by trusted administrators can run.

Regardless of how a user's environment is delivered, it is essential that they receive only the applications they require and cannot introduce unknown executables into the environment. Delivery may be through presentation virtualisation, desktop virtualisation, OS and application streaming, personal computer, notebook or any combination of the above.

The use of unauthorised software is a primary factor in destabilising user environments, and the costs associated with rectifying a corrupt desktop can be significant.

Contextual Entitlement

The extent to which an employee has access to corporate applications can depend on the context of the accessing device. For example, a user in an Internet Café will typically have a different level of application access from an employee within the secure confines of the corporate LAN.

AppSense Application Manager is able to utilise information about the user's context in order to determine the level of entitlement necessary. Parameters such as location, firewall settings and even time of day can be used to establish a necessary level of entitlement.

Licence Management

AppSense Application Manager is endorsed by Microsoft to enforce software licences by controlling application usage on a per device basis. Passive mode enables monitoring, auditing and reporting to detail application access across the user and device base.

By controlling which users or devices have permission to run named applications, limits can be placed on the number of application instances, which devices or users can run the application, the timing of when users run a program and for how long. Licence audits and access restriction based on number of licences can now be enforced regardless of method of application delivery.

Application Access Entitlement is one of the most important aspects of policy management, yet for most organisations it is one of the most difficult to manage. Typically it is controlled by complex scripts and high maintenance lists, often proving to be time consuming and inflexible. AppSense Application Manager automatically controls application usage on a per user basis out of the box, without the overhead of scripts or lists.
