Home Access Scheme

270,000 low income families to be given free laptops

The £300m Home Access Scheme, first announced by Gordon Brown in 2008, will allow some of the most in-need children, those in care and from the poorest homes, to apply for a grant for a free laptop and broadband connection.

It is hoped that around 270,000 families will benefit under the scheme, which goes nationwide in the first quarter of 2010. Qualifying families will receive a laptop, an office suite and a year's broadband connection.

Phoenix Software has agreed to supply Microsoft Office licences for these laptops at a very special price, to help make the product more widely available to poorer families. The Institute of Fiscal Studies concludes that having a computer at home could lead to a two grade improvement in one subject at GCSE. Now there's 'job satisfaction' for us!
