Here in the Phoenix Public Sector Team we have over the last year been working with an increasing number of NHS Trusts who are looking at mobile technologies and how they can be used within the workplace. Whether it's a case of Trust-owned Smartphones or indeed doctors making use of tablet devices, the management and the security of these is causing significant problems.
A variety of software vendors have been quick to pick up on these issues and there is now an increasing number of technologies available to assist. For a Trust looking at a 'Bring Your Own Device' (BYOD) policy there are products which can provide security without inhibiting the end user functionality of the employee's own device. These products can be delivered via an App which will allow users to securely access email and documents and, because it is delivered via an App, it can be remotely removed if the user ever leaves the Trust. In addition, many Trusts are also providing Smartphones, iPads etc directly to their employees and they are looking for security technologies to manage these - with these devices being owned by the Trusts, security can be implemented directly on the device and policies on usage (such as camera settings, connectivity to third party devices etc) can be put in place.
Over the coming months Phoenix will be looking to run events to help Trusts get to grips with the security challenges that they face. However if you have any immediate concerns or if you would like to understand what solutions may be available for you, please do not hesitate to contact the Phoenix Public Sector Team on 0845 265 1265.
