Team Phoenix Talks: Kathryn Read

We catch-up with our Operations Co-ordinator, Kathryn Read to find out how they were introduced into the tech industry, what their role within our operations team entails, and why Phoenix is the best company they’ve ever worked for.

How did you get into the tech industry?

Growing up, I always had an interest in IT. Despite this, I ended up going into a nursing career which unfortunately led to burnout, causing me to reconsider my career choice. I rekindled my passion for tech and secured a position as a service desk analyst. It was there that I found my love and passion for the IT industry, leading me to stay in it for the past five years.

What appealed to you about the industry?

A huge motivation for me was finding an industry that allowed me to maintain my work/ life balance. I also love the ever-changing nature of the IT industry, there’s something new every day, and so many opportunities to learn.

Tell us about your career history and what led you to Phoenix

Previously, I’ve worked as a nurse and then a service desk analyst. When I left my previous role, I was approached by Phoenix, and after some research and personal recommendations I thought Phoenix was a lovely, growing, and successful business. I applied for the job, and the rest, as you say, is history.

What’s your experience of working at Phoenix so far?

I’m not kidding when I say this, Phoenix is by far the best company I have ever worked for. Every employee is considered an individual, and my team and manager are fantastic. I started a week before the pandemic started, and despite this I still felt as if I received enough training and support from my team – they took it all in their stride and made sure they still had enough time to teach me things. My team are like my family, and ever since my interview I feel like that is what Phoenix is, one big family.

Tell us a little bit about your role

I work in the operations department, in a quite varied role. My job ranges from placing volume licensing to sourcing products, though I usually work on the purchasing side of things. This means I place a lot of the non-Microsoft orders, though my day can vary – from helping sales with an issue, to speaking with suppliers, and creating products on the system. It can be a quite intense job, especially at the end of the month when a lot of orders come through!

Why do you think Phoenix has been recognised as one of the UK’s best companies to work for?

Where do I start? I think Phoenix has been recognised due to being a listening and proactive company, that show real care for their employees. This is shown through our networks (such as mental health and wellbeing), our open-door policy (including directors), and inclusivity throughout the business.

How would you describe the culture at Phoenix?

Phoenix is like a family, we all like to get together and celebrate our achievements. It was challenging during the pandemic, but Phoenix powered through and still managed to celebrate people’s success on a regular basis.
