Team Phoenix Talks: Jennifer Wilson

Our Digital Marketing Manager explores how she introduced herself into the tech industry, her success within our Marketing team, and what she thinks of the Phoenix culture.

How did you get into the industry?

I got into the industry by chance. I previously use to work for a digital marketing agency who had clients from all different sectors, and before that I worked within the travel and tourism industry. I didn’t know if I would like the tech industry before starting, but I enjoyed working in a fast-paced environment, so I thought I’d give it a go. From my first interview, I was sold on Phoenix and the sector as a whole.

What appealed to you about the industry?

I think the fact it’s so fast-paced and innovative is exciting. The solutions and products we’re promoting are new and have the ability to really transform the way people work. It’s often enabling them to have a better work experience, life-work balance, or helping the users they serve.

The tech we talk about is really broad as well, one day we could be doing a campaign on technologies that enable better hybrid working, and the next on AI software and how this can make processes more efficient. The variety is great!

Tell us about your career history and what led you to Phoenix

I went to university in Bristol, knowing I wanted to go into Marketing or PR. I completed lots of relevant work experience and placements throughout my studies so I had experience as soon as I graduated. I then went off and did a couple of ski seasons, later being offered a job by the chalet company to help with their sales and marketing. From there I went to work for a digital marketing agency which was intense, but I learnt a lot. I then started at Phoenix in January 2020.

What’s your experience of working at Phoenix so far?

To be honest, I have never felt so supported and invested in by an employer. My boss is amazing, the people I work with are incredible, so we have a supportive culture within the team. I’ve since had a baby and coming back to work has been smooth. I phased my return to help me and my son adjust, it’s worked brilliantly for us and I’m really enjoying having this part of my life back. We offer hybrid working and flexible hours which works well for childcare and ensuring I can maximise the time with my family.

Tell us a little bit about your role

I oversee all of the marketing campaigns we do with our vendors and software providers. We create marketing campaigns in partnership with our vendors, whether that be events, webinars, lead generation campaign etc. There’s a huge variety in the activity and budgets, which keeps it exciting.

How would you describe the culture at Phoenix?

The culture at Phoenix is supportive and welcoming. I really feel like they want to support me, invest in me, and do what it takes to ensure I progress in my career, which is really important to me. I feel like I have flexibility that means I can have a great work/ life balance.

Why do you think Phoenix has been recertified as a Great Place to Work™?

They’re supportive and do everything they can to make it a great experience for all employees. They want people to be proud to work for Phoenix and are committed to doing anything it takes to ensure everyone is. No idea is off the table, they listen to you and weigh it up. It’s an exciting time to work at Phoenix, we’re hugely growing and it’s amazing to be part of that!
