Phoenix Software > Events > Managing a SOC in the public sector

Best practice and what you should know

In the current climate, it is key that your systems, devices, and employees are as secure as possible, with a structured security operations strategy in place.

With a heightened alertness in the public sector around cyber threats and security incidents, many organisations are looking to increase their visibility of potential risks and threats, and to provide IT staff with insights on where to prioritise their efforts and co-ordinate their defences. To do this internally can be effective, but costly. With a global skills shortage within cyber security, many organisations find that hiring and retaining quality security professionals can be difficult, and expensive.

On the day, we will be looking at what the UK public sector is trying to achieve and highlights eight areas of concern that they face when it comes to improving their cyber security posture.

  1. Speed of Detection. Why is speed of detection important in the public sector? How can organisations transition from detection taking days/weeks even months, to seconds and minutes?
  2. Speed of Response. Why is speed of response important in the public sector? How can corporations’ transition from speed of response taking days/weeks even months, to seconds and minutes?
  3. Round the Clock. How can the public sector transition from 9-5 monitoring, detection, and response to 24/7/365 monitoring, detection, and response? And why is this crucial?
  4. Detect Complex Threats. How can the public sector go from the detection of simple security events to the detection of complex and sophisticated events?
  5. Skills and Expertise. Why does the public sector need highly skilled expertise, and how can they acquire them?
  6. Risks Visualised. Why does the public sector need highly visual risk interpretations and full visibility?
  7. Governance of Security Operations. How can the public sector move from no/little standardisation and lack of controls to complete OLA, SLA, KPI and Metrics Enforced?
  8. Cost Certainty. How can the public sector move from ad-hoc expenditure to clear operational costs?
