Important changes to VMware by Broadcom software binaries

From March 24, 2025, VMware by Broadcom will introduce a new method for downloading software binaries. These changes affect updates and patches for vCenter, ESXi, vSAN File Services, and more. If you rely on VMware software, it’s important to understand what’s changing, why it’s happening, and the steps you’ll need to take to avoid any disruption.

What’s changing?

Broadcom is rolling out a new download process to improve security and align with industry best practices. From March 24, 2025, all VMware software binaries, covering products like VCF, vCenter, ESX, and vSAN File Services, will be accessible via a centralised download site. This will replace the current system, which spans multiple download locations.

The key updates are:

  • A single download portal: all binaries will be accessible from one location, simplifying access for both online and air-gapped environment
  • Token-based verification: every download will require a unique “download token” for authorisation. This token will be embedded in the URL to ensure only authorised users can access the files
  • Sunsetting old URLs: the existing download URLs will continue to work for a short transition period, but they will expire on April 24, 2025

What you need to do

To prepare for the switch, we recommend taking the following actions as soon as possible:

  • Get your download token: you’ll need a valid token to download any binaries going forward
  • Update your systems: if you use in-product URLs or automation scripts to fetch updates, these will need updating to reflect the new download structure and tokenised URLs
  • Review documentation: VMware has published a set of KB articles and blog posts to walk you through the technical steps
  • Reach out for help: if you encounter any issues or need support during the transition, VMware’s global support team is ready to assist

Our specialists are here to support you through this transition. If you need help reviewing your VMware environment or updating your processes, get in touch.
