Extended Support for Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2012 R2 is ending this year

If your organisation is still using Windows Server 2012 or Windows Server 2012 R2, extended support for these services is coming to an end on 10th October 2023. To keep your organisation running smoothly and safely, it’s important to find a solution before this extended support ends.

Now is the time to explore your options and choose a solution catered to your organisation and what you need – whether that’s a short-term or long-term solution.

What are your options?

If your organisation is in need of a long-term solution for your servers, you should move to Azure where you your servers will continue to run as normal. In using Azure, your organisation will drive innovation, have elevated security, and increased compliancy.

The benefits of migrating to Azure include:

  • Enhanced user experiences
  • Advanced security updates at no charge
  • Lower IT overhead and maintenance costs
  • Global scale
  • Agility: adopt more cloud services at your convenience

If you’re not ready to migrate to the cloud or you feel it’s not the right solution for your organisation, there is the option to stay on-premise. You can build servers with a newer version of Windows Server and migrate your applications and data, or upgrade in-place to a supported version of Windows Server. If your organisation is currently using Windows Server 2012 or Windows Server 2012 R2, you can upgrade to Windows Server 2016 or Windows Server 2019. There isn’t a direct path, so you will have to upgrade one version at a time. As you upgrade, you still have the option to migrate to Azure.

If you are planning on continuing to use Windows Server 2012 or Windows Server 2012 R2 after the End of Support deadline, VMware provide a simple and effective solution that will ensure reduced exposure and attack surface when no further security patches are available.
