AI is coming, and fast. Implementing AI solutions without prior preparation is the quickest way to become less secure and inefficient. Here are the five reasons your organisation needs strong AI readiness and how you can achieve it.
In a recent study we completed, we found that 95% of participants are not confident in their AI policies; and we see this reflected across the entire public sector.
AI is new and volatile, but extremely worth it if you do it right. We’ve highlighted the five main reasons you shouldn’t skip AI readiness foundations, as well as how to prepare for AI.
One: AI needs clear governance
Before deploying AI tools, organisations need a clear framework to manage risk, ethics, and accountability.
Do you have policies in place to govern how AI is used across your teams? If not, you’re not alone. Based on recent surveys we’ve done in the public sector, we found that very little organisations have any defined policies in place. This leaves these organisations exposed to risk and uncertainty.
Without strong governance, AI can produce biased outcomes, misuse data, or operate in ways that undermine trust.
Two: Data chaos equals AI failure
AI is only as smart as the data it’s fed. Disconnected systems, duplicate records, and poor data hygiene can severely limit the effectiveness of AI tools.
If your organisation is dealing with fragmented data or legacy infrastructure, AI won’t deliver meaningful results.
Three: Purpose between AI
Introducing AI just because it’s trending won’t yield results. You need defined goals, measurable outcomes, and use cases that align with your organisational objectives.
A strong AI strategy should include:
- Clear objectives – what problem are you trying to solve
- Identified use cases – where can AI drive the most value? (e.g. automating admin, enhancing reporting, improving user engagement)
- Success metrics – how will you measure ROI or improvement?
- Alignment with wider digital strategy – is AI part of a bigger transformation journey?
Four: Skills gaps will stall your progress
Even with the right tools, AI won’t succeed if people don’t understand how to use it. Upskilling staff, aligning teams, and creating a culture of digital confidence are essential steps.
This isn’t just an IT issue, HR, finance, marketing, and leadership teams all need support to understand where AI fits into their workflows.
Five: Infrastructure and security must be ready
AI adds complexity to your digital estate. Do you have the compute power, security controls, and integration capability to support it?
Whether you’re working in a hybrid cloud environment or purely in Microsoft 365, foundational architecture matters.
AI readiness checklist: questions to ask yourself
- Do you have defined policies around ethical and responsible AI use?
- Have you considered the risks of bias, privacy, or misuse?
- Is your data clean, structured, and stored in a way that AI tools can access it?
- Have you identified high-value use cases where AI can make a real difference?
- Are your AI goals aligned with your wider digital transformation strategy?
- Do your staff understand the basics of AI and how it applies to their roles?
