Women in IT: explore our story

Having a diverse workforce plays a key role in business success. A report by McKinsey shows that organisations that embrace and promote diversity perform better, attract top-tier talent, foster higher levels of engagement among its workforce, and retain talent. With women making up just 20% of IT specialists in the UK, we’re passionate about getting more women into the IT industry.

Everyone deserves to feel welcome in all environments, and it’s one of our top priorities to not only achieve but encourage this. By hiring women into tech roles, we get one step further to reaching a place of full diversity. Watch the video and explore the key topics surrounding women in IT:

Why diversity is important: diversity is crucial, bringing together several perspectives and experiences while improving business success. The McKinsey report ‘Delivering Through Diversity’ shows that organisations in the top quartile of their rankings for successful gender diversity on their executive teams were 21% more likely to have above-average profitability

How diversity has changed over the years: as technology has transformed, so has the representation of women in the industry. Throughout the years, we have begun to see more women within senior positions acting as positive role models to young girls interested in the industry

Sam Mudd

“The great thing that we have – and that has changed over time – is that we have more female role models.”

Sam Mudd, Managing Director at Phoenix

What still needs to be done: education and awareness is crucial, with many young girls growing up believing certain stereotypes associated with women in tech. Visiting schools and delivering talks dedicated to breaking these beliefs is a step towards a more positive view of tech careers

What Phoenix are doing to get more women into IT: by attending career days, targeting recruitment efforts to all genders, and educating women about available roles, Phoenix have put a lot of effort into encouraging women into the industry, and then supporting those women once they are in the industry.

I think it’s really about encouraging women to understand that the IT industry itself is not just about technical roles.

Cheryl Lapham, Microsoft Business Manager at Phoenix

What Phoenix are doing to support women: supporting all employees with a positive work/ life balance is very important to Phoenix, with our hybrid working policy and parental leave schemes being paramount to our core values

Watch the video to explore how we work to implement these improvement points to establish a workforce that mirrors our values, embodying and fostering equality to embrace each person’s unique identity. We recognise that achieving this is an ongoing endeavour, and we are actively pursuing enhanced diversity and inclusion across our operations through deliberate actions and initiatives.
